dressing up the dorm

Once fourth of July passes, I feel as though school is just around the corner. Summer just seems to fly from this point forward. Despite the fact that my days of the “school supply” list with its endless boxes of kleenex, crayons and bottles of glue are well behind me, I still get excited about new supplies and so do my two girls. Their tastes have matured quite a bit so they are no longer impressed by a colored binder and a pictured folder.  They, like me, adore russell + hazel, girl of all work, lamy, etc. . With my youngest heading off to her first year of college in August, we are busy thinking about supplies not only for the classroom but for her dorm room as well. At the top of her list are these adorable “puffy frames” from working class studio. While from afar they look like they are inflatable, once you get close you’ll see that they are a nice thick cotton stuffed fabric. Nothing short of adorable. Perfect, yes, for a dorm room, but they could just as easily go in an office, nursery or kitchen. Each frame comes with a sturdy piece of cardboard for mounting a picture, corkboard (with girl of all work super cute thumbtacks!) or anything else that suits your fancy. There are two sizes and several colors so I am sure one will work with whatever color scheme she and her roomie decide on. With space at a premium in the dorms, you really have to abide by the rule that if it isn’t beautiful or functional than leave it at home. I am certain that the puffy frames will be heading to college this fall.

Happy decorating.

lifesavers

There are definitely certain things  that make my existence easier, better and oh so much more enjoyable, but on crazy days like today, I am highly aware that it is the people in my life that are the true lifesavers. From the friend who helps on a moment’s notice, a new employee, the hair stylist who squeezes me in and a doctor who spends  just that much more time explaining (and in my case re-explaining) my son’s injury….. these are the folks who deserve my appreciation. They are the red lifesavers (my favorite) in the bowl of greens. A sugar high of the sweetest kind.

save the date

It may be the dog days of summer but there’s no better time to start organizing for the busy days, weeks, months to come. Both the russell + hazel mini smart date system and the mom/my agendas started fresh with a new year on July 1st and runs through December 2011. If you’re in need of that mid-year recharge, come take a look at all the colors, patterns, pages, add-ons that each planner has to offer. Honestly, I can’t think of anything better than updating and organizing. Set me up with a fresh calendar, stickies, colored markers and I am a happy girl going to town marking down dates, color coordinating events to family members and making lists. If this isn’t your “thing” but long for a system of your own, I will do it for you. The only thing better than doing my own calendar is doing yours!

a festive friday

Cheers to the red, white and blue!

whistle while you tote

We are finally getting all of the goodies we picked out at the stationery show and tops on my list this week is the adorable whistle tote from jack and lulu.  Made of that oh so very strong cotton duck cloth, it will undoubtedly hold up to the wear and tear of numerous trips to the grocery, pool, library, etc… and with the handy dandy attached whistle you are only one blow away from hailing a cab, calling your kids or just letting off steam. What could be more cute or more fun?

Get a few of these anchor hooks and you’ll have the perfect place to hang your whistle tote!

charming

I love charm bracelets. Another one of my obsessions. I have several and recently inherited three of my grandmother’s. Their monetary value is small but to me they are priceless. Each one is full to overflowing with charms and I used to adore listening to her tell the history of each charm. I always knew she was coming from the jingling of those big heavy bracelets. It was her signature. Given the fact that we like to celebrate the “everyday chirps and extraordinary cheers” here at the shop, I thought it would be fun to carry a line of charms and bracelets. They are such a perfect way to commemorate events, important days, or just because you need a jingle in your life. These gold or pearl bracelets (and necklaces) from John Wind have an eclectic assortment of goodies to choose from…monograms, pearls, symbols, bling, lockets, etc..that just clip on. They’re lightweight and oh so easy to wear. In fact, several years ago I bought one while traveling. I fell in love with it and wanted one with an initial. Unfortunately they only had one left and it was a “W”. Not very appropriate when my name begins with an “S”. I bought it anyway and told everyone it stood for my son, Will.

Behind every charm there’s a good story.
